Wellness Challenge Point System
The Adirondack Wellness Challenge Point System is comprised of the following:
- Total Steps (using a pedometer)
- Physical Activity and Exercise
- Losing % of Body Weight
- Eating a Combination of Fruits and Vegetables
- Drinking Water
- Bonus Points
Participants will enter in their wellness activities through the Wellness Challenge Point System which will automatically calculate their score and combine the points for total team points. Best practice is to log your activities into the website on a weekly basis.
How Points are Awarded
Total Steps (using a steps tracking device)
Participants will earn points based on total daily steps. Recommended daily steps = 10,000.
- 2,500 Steps = 1.25 miles
- 5,000 steps = 2.50 miles
- 10,000 steps = 5 miles
- 12,500 steps = 6.25 miles
- 15,000 steps = 7.50 miles
For every 1,000 steps, a person receives 2 points. For example, if a person reaches the goal of 10,000 steps per day, they receive 20 points.
We are looking for accurate step counts recorded on a step-tracking device. Partial points will be awarded for the exact number of steps entered into the Point System.
Physical Activity and Exercise
Participants will earn points on various exercise routines based on how long you exercise and the intensity of the exercise. The easiest way to check your exercise intensity is the talk test – if you can talk and sing while exercising without running out of breath, you’re exercising at a low intensity. If you can comfortably chat, but you can’t sing any more than a few words without running out of breath, you’re exercising at moderate intensity. If you can’t say more than a few words without having to pause to breathe, you’re exercising at high intensity.
On average, a person will burn 70 calories by walking 1 mile. If you walk 5 miles, you’ve burned on average 350 calories. This will be used as the baseline calculation for determining points.
Each exercise routine has a specific base-calorie value. We take a look at the length of time per activity and its base-calorie value, and then give the player 10 points for every 350 calories.
Calculate the Point Value: points = ( base calories value / 350 ) * 10
Losing Percentage of your Body Weight
At the end of the competition, you receive 100 Points for each 1% of body weight lost during the challenge. At the beginning of the competition, you will have an initial weigh-in. There will be a final weigh-in at the end of the competition and the Campus Nurse, using the formula below, will provide a final percentage.
Formula: (Start weight – Finish Weight) x 100 ÷ Start weight = % lost
Example: If a person’s starting weight was 200 lbs and they lost 10 lbs, the total percentage of weight loss was 5%.
(200 – 190) x 100 = 1,000
1,000 ÷ 200 (start weight) = 5
You lost 5% of your body weight. You get 500 points!
Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don’t have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions.
You can earn points by hydrating and drinking water each day. Try to drink at least 64 oz. (8 cups) per day.
- Drink 32 oz. per day and earn 10 points
- Drink between 33-63 oz. per day and earn 15 points
- Drink 64 oz. or more per day and earn 20 points
